Reykhólar and Surroundings

The Reykhólar community www.reykholar.is - is a vast area, or 1.150 sq. kilometres. The population is however, only 300 people. This community is situated along the north coast of the beautiful Breiðafjörður bay with myriad of islands, which many belong to Reykhólar. The nature is extremely beautiful, with mountains of different size and shape, making this community dissimilar from nearby places for example the Dalir-district on one hand and the Southern part of the West Fjords on the other hand.

The coast line at Breiðafjörður is probably the longest one in Iceland, due to all the fjords and islands. In Reykhólar-community only you can find 13 fjords and those are the only fjords in Iceland facing south..

In the eastern part you can find for example Reykhólar, a small village of 120 people with a school, a small store, excellent outdoor swimming pool (25 m), guesthouse and some other services. The perquisite-exhibition at Reykhólar is a must see for all visitors. It shows how the inhabitants have used natural resources like eider-down, seals and birds through the ages.

At Reykhólar you will also find Thorverk Ltd., the only seaweed-factory in Iceland, using geothermal-power in the production. 15 km from Reykhólar you will find Hotel Bjarkalundur, a very cosy summer-hotel where you can have excellent meals during summer. Bjarkalundur is only 215 km from Reykjavik.

From Reykhólar you can go west (to Patreksfjörður), north (to Ísafjarðardjúp), north-east (to Hólmavík) or south (to Búðardalur). Having in mind that Reykhólar is closest to Reykjavik of all the towns in the Westfjords, Reykhólar makes an excellent starting point to the wonders of the Westfjords.
